Lake Size: 5,295 acres (2,143 ha) Shoreline Length (Miles): 38.1 mi (61.3 km) Deepest Depth: 59 ft (18 m) Latitude: 43.971667 Longitude: -70.611667 Lake Level Above Sea Level: 268 ft (82 m) Counties: Cumberland County Cities: Naples Water Quality: Long Lake thermally stratified in all basins during the summer months, but serious dissolved oxygen depressions in the cold water layers greatly diminish the potential for coldwater fishery management.
Information: Canal boats from Portland harbor reached Long Lake through the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, completed in 1832. The canal's Songo Lock facilities still control Long Lake water level. Each November, Long Lake is drained by about 3 feet so that melting snow does not cause a flood in the spring. The lake is the site of many summer camps, including Camp Newfound, Camp Owatonna, Camp Takajo, and Camp Wildwood (actually located on nearby Wood's Pond).
