Information: Lake Strom Thurmond, known in Georgia as Clarks Hill Lake, is a reservoir at the border between Georgia and South Carolina in the Savannah River Basin. It was built between 1946 and 1954 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers near the confluence of the "Little River" and the Savannah River. At 71,000 acres (287 km²), it is the second-largest artificial lake east of the Mississippi River, behind the Kentucky Lake on the Tennessee River. The dam is located upstream from Augusta, Georgia.
Clarks Hill Lake is located in both Georgia and South Carolina; in South Carolina it is called J. Strom Thurmond Lake. Clarks Hill Lake is formed by J. Strom Thurmond Dam on the Savannah River twenty-two miles above Augusta. The lake extends a little over 39 miles up the Savannah River, 29 miles up the Little River, and 6.5 miles up the Broad River in Georgia, and 17 miles up the Little River in South Carolina. It covers approximately 71,100 acres and has 1200 miles of shoreline. There are also 250 small islands dotting the surface of the lake. The dam and lake were built between 1946 and 1954, and they comprise the largest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River.
