Information: The Agua Fria River is a 120 mi/193 km long intermittent stream that flows generally south from 20 miles east northeast of Prescott, Arizona. Prescott draws much of its municipal water supply from the upper Agua Fria drainage. The Agua Fria runs through the Agua Fria National Monument. The river then flows through a small canyon called "Black Canyon" into Lake Pleasant, a popular recreation area near Peoria, Arizona. (There is a large "Black Canyon" on the Colorado River along the Arizona-Nevada border.) During rainy times when water flows in the intermittent Agua Fria River, it discharges into the Gila River, which is also a river that only flows during wet periods of the year. The Central Arizona Water Conservation District of the Central Arizona Project operates the Agua Fria Recharge Project, which is located about four miles south of the New Waddell Dam. It serves to to recharge underground aquifers in this area Description Adjacent to rapidly expanding communities, the 71,000-acre Agua Fria National Monument is approximately 40 miles north of central Phoenix. The monument encompasses two mesas and the canyon of the Agua Fria River. Elevations range from 2,150 feet above sea level along the Agua Fria Canyon to about 4,600 feet in the northern hills. This expansive mosaic of semi-desert area, cut by ribbons of valuable riparian forest, offers one of the most significant systems of prehistoric sites in the American Southwest. In addition to the rich record of human history, the monument contains outstanding biological resources. Shown here is an example of the pristine riparian habitat along the Agua Fria River, which is just a short hike from Badger Springs (exit 256). Images taken May 2000.

The Agua Fria River was running high last week, providing some nutrient loading. The current will likely attract stripers even though we are a couple of months – a least – from the spawning time. Don’t forget that there is a bald eagle nesting closure on the Agua Fria and the access road off Table Mesa Road is closed. Try working the open section of the Agua Fria and target the submerged river channel – that is where you will likely locate the huge schools of stripers and whites. For all those who enjoy seeing lots of shorebirds, such as snowy egrets, try in the Humbug Creek area. This area can also be a striper haven and might even hold for nice crappies as well.
The ruins of the home of King Woolsey, the Nineteenth Century settler who gave the river its English name, still stand in a field in what has become the town of Dewey-Humboldt. The ruins of prehistoric settlers are found throughout the region. Historical observations indicate that the desert grassland of the lower valleys was once home to thousands of antelope and myriad other creatures. For over a century most of the Basin has been grazed by livestock, and in recent years the grassland has begun to be replaced by streets and houses. Invasive plants and animals are spreading and replacing native species throughout the Basin. In the year 2000 only a few hundred antelope could be found, and about a third of these are expected to disappear during the next decade or two.
