Information: Black Butte Lake is an artificial lake located in Tehama and Glenn Counties, California, USA. The lake was formed from Stony Creek in 1963 upon the completion of Black Butte Dam by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam is located approximately 9 miles (14.5 km) west of Orland. At full pool, the lake is 7 miles (11.3 km) long and has a shoreline of 40 miles (64.4 km) and a surface area of 4,460 acres (18 km2). The dam and lake were constructed for flood protection for local towns and agricultural lands

Visitors to Black Butte Lake can enjoy an assortment of recreations. The park is open all year. Day use of recreation areas is on a first-come, first-served basis. Group dam tours and ranger programs can be scheduled by calling the office. A centrally located amphitheater offers summer campfire programs.
A 75-acre ATV area is open June through February on the north side of the lake. A variety of hills and trails are available for exploration by motorcycles and all terrain vehicles. Appropriate safety equipment is required
Powerboats, personal watercraft and sailboats will find ample room for water fun throughout the "v" shaped lake. Sailboarding is especially popular. Boat ramps are located at Buckhorn, Orland Buttes and Eagle Pass Recreation Areas. Be aware of shallow areas and other hazards that may appear as the lake level changes.
Black Butte is well known throughout California as an excellent warm water fishery, with the best fishing during the spring and early summer. Crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, channel catfish, Florida bluegill, and green sunfish are the major game fish
Three self-guided nature trails offer quiet, pleasurable hikes through the rolling oak foothills. The Buckhorn Recreation Area includes a playground for active tots. Families will enjoy the shady and well-maintained picnic facilities available at several locations around the lake
