It is an artificial lake formed in 1917 upon the completion of the Copco Dam on the Klamath River. It has a surface area of 1000 acres and contains 77,000 acre-feet of water. At one time the river just below the dam was 130 feet above its present bed and water backed up 5 miles and formed a natural lake which varied in width and was a mile at its widest part. The elevation of the lake is about 2700 feet.
